I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Machalniks. The book is historical fiction so that it gave me the sense of living through the events of the establishment of an Israeli Airforce. It’s clear that the author did his research well, as he went into detail explaining both the why and how the events took place. If you like a fast read that stays true to the story line, I’d highly recommend this book.

I loved this book…fast easy reading and the story was easy to understand. I had trouble putting it down. Being Jewish it unleashed some of my emotions how these volunteers risked their life and loss of citizenship from their birth country to prevent another holocaust Israel’s Arab neighbors tried to finish what Hitler couldn’t; I was amazed that almost 20% of these guys were not Jewish; so I loaned my copy to a non-Jewish friend who also loved it.

There are far too many other memorable characters to list.

This fact-based historical novel tells the miraculous story of how a small band of volunteer pilots (mostly Americans) flying surplus WW II military aircraft that were barely airworthy, helped save the State of Israel from destruction by massive Arab invading forces after Israel declared independence in May, 1948. The author’s snappy dialogue, impressive research and attention to detail make this a compelling and important read. Highly recommended.

What a great read. This is a fabulous story about the birth of Israel from an American perspective. The author makes you feel like you are there. It is so clever how he weaves in real life people and describes the role of the US Government during some difficult times. I walked away from this book thinking nothing has changed over time.

Kudos to Dick Berman. I am now going to read other books written by Mr. Berman

Thoroughly enjoyable read. Interesting historical content and great characters. Their bravery and ability led to one of the most efficient Air Forces in the world today. Everyone interested in the birth of the State of Israel must read this book.
